Audio-Technica ATH-GDL3 Review: The lightweight gaming headset is extremely comfortable March 31, 2022by Martin 6 Audio-Technica ATH-GDL3 stands out from the crowd compared to other gaming headphones for its blue highlights (there is no fancy RGB lighting or anything). But the outstanding design is very good, especially from a headset that promises high-quality sound with an open back, all for a reasonable price. So how does it really stack up against its closest competitor? Lightweight design equals comfortable fit Less than 220 grams Two detachable cables: 3.0 m (9.8 ′) with 3.5 mm (1/8″) microphone and headphone jack for computers 1.2m (3.9′) cable with 3.5mm (1/8″) TRRS cable for PS5/XBX/other consoles Detachable hypercardioid microphone When we first took the ATH-GDL3 out of the box, we thought the headphone felt a little cheap and flimsy.
That initial thought was quickly dispelled when we realized it was C Level Executive List designed to be lightweight. In fact, it weighs less than most mobile phones, and with a soft power dock it's remarkably easy to wear - even for long gaming sessions. We happily used these headphones all day long listening to music and then gaming at night without any noise. This was another surprise because the headphones are not that deep. However, they are made of soft fabric material with a pleasant lining. They don't block out a lot of outside noise, but you wouldn't expect that from an open-back headphone. That's an important part of the Audio-Technica ATH-GDL3's design: the open back means you hear more of what's around you than just your audio output stream. It's not necessarily the same as closed-back headphones, but it gives a nice wide field of view and natural sound.
This is useful as there is no microphone monitoring on these headphones, so the open back design means you can hear your conversation when you need to. Audio-Technica ATH-GDL3 is designed to work with PC and console. It comes with two cables - a longer 3.5-meter dedicated headphone and 3.5 mm microphone connection for PC and a very short 1.2 m cable for use with PS5 , Xbox Series X , and other game consoles. We appreciate having the extra length on the computer cable, as it is usually only two meters long. Although we will note that the cable seems quite thin and perhaps not as durable as other braided cables we've seen in other headphones. There's also the risk of getting caught on things because of its length, but it detaches easily from the headset, so that's a bonus. Wide and open, but powerful sound Open design, 45 mm drivers Frequency response 10-35,000 Hz The 45mm drivers aren't the biggest we've seen - kudos to Odze Penrose at 100mm - but they're surprisingly loud and capable.
